What Is a Rate Check?

A rate check is a comprehensive, line-by-line analysis of your current merchant processing statement. Most business owners pay more than they need to for credit card processing — but the statements are intentionally complex, making it nearly impossible to spot overcharges on your own. Our team at Ireland Pay specializes in decoding these statements and identifying exactly where you are overpaying.

The rate check is completely free, carries no obligation, and requires no changes to your current setup. Think of it as a second opinion on your processing costs — one that could save your business thousands of dollars per year.

What We Look For

Merchant processing statements are notoriously difficult to read. Processors often bury fees under vague line items or bundle charges in ways that obscure the true cost. Here is what our team examines during your rate check:

Interchange Markup

The margin your processor adds on top of the base interchange rate set by Visa and Mastercard. This is where most overcharging happens.

Monthly & Annual Fees

Statement fees, account maintenance fees, and annual membership charges that add up quickly and are often negotiable — or entirely unnecessary.

PCI Compliance Fees

Many processors charge $100+ per year for PCI compliance that should be included in your service. Some even charge PCI non-compliance penalties.

Batch & Transaction Fees

Per-batch settlement fees, per-transaction authorization fees, and gateway charges that multiply with every sale you process.

Hidden Surcharges

Regulatory fees, network access fees, and brand usage fees that processors slip in under technical-sounding names to avoid scrutiny.

Early Termination Clauses

We check your current contract for cancellation penalties and advise on the best timing to switch without incurring unnecessary charges.

How Much Are You Overpaying?

Studies consistently show that the average small business overpays on credit card processing by 20% to 40%. For a business processing $30,000 per month, that can mean $1,800 to $4,300 in unnecessary fees every year. Larger-volume merchants lose even more. The problem is not that better rates do not exist — it is that most merchants do not know what they are actually paying because their statements are designed to be confusing.

Our Dual Pricing Program can eliminate up to 100% of your processing costs. Even merchants who choose traditional pricing models typically see savings of 25% or more after our rate optimization.

The only way to know your real savings potential is to let us look at your statement. There is absolutely no cost, no pressure, and no obligation to switch. If we cannot save you money, we will tell you — and you will have gained valuable insight into your current processing costs.

How to Read Your Processing Statement

Your monthly processing statement typically arrives from your current processor via email or mail. Look for a document that shows your total volume processed, the number of transactions, and a breakdown of fees. The key number to find is your effective rate— your total fees divided by your total volume. This single percentage tells you what you are really paying, regardless of how the fees are labeled.

If your effective rate is above 3%, there is almost certainly room for savings. If it is above 3.5%, you are likely significantly overpaying. Even rates in the 2.5% to 3% range can often be reduced through interchange optimization or our zero-fee dual pricing model. Not sure where to find your statement?
